Bubba Ho-tep
Released 2003. “You know the legends, now learn the truth.”
Don Coscarelli discovered Joe R. Lansdale's novella in the 1994 anthology The King Is Dead and optioned the rights to adapt it. With Bruce Campbell delivering a transformative performance as an aging Elvis Presley and Ossie Davis bringing unexpected gravitas as a fellow nursing home resident claiming to be JFK, production faced the challenge of convincing studios that audiences would spend 90 minutes with elderly protagonists. After a rapturous festival premiere in 2002, Coscarelli self-distributed the film with only 32 prints roadshowed across the country, building word-of-mouth that made it one of the year's biggest indie successes before MGM acquired it.
