Don Coscarelli discovered Jason Pargin's novel through an Amazon recommendation in 2007 and optioned the rights to adapt it. With Paul Giamatti as executive producer and cast member, production began in October 2010, facing the challenge of condensing the sprawling narrative. The film premiered at Sundance in 2012 and was acquired by Magnet Releasing.
